Quick Links: Sifu Chan Cheuk Yiu / Lineage

With the encouragement and support of Grandmaster Chan, the Canadian WingChun Fellowship was founded by Chuck O'Neill (Chan Cheuk Yiu), in 2005 to help pass on the art of Wing Chun from the Yip Man - Moy Yat - Nelson Chan line. At the Canadian WingChun Fellowship, we focus on teaching Ving Tsun through the use of good body mechanics, and principles found in physics.

The Canadian WingChun Fellowship follows the tradition of Chinese martial arts with a modern approach. Promoting a fun, and relaxed learning atmosphere, with good training. As a traditional Chinese martial art, the Canadian WingChun Fellowship teaches that through martial arts training, our goal and primary focus is to seek to improve ourselves, and to learn valuable self-defense as a by-product of our training.

The Canadian WingChun Fellowship is a member of the Wingchun Sport Association of Ontario, and a proud member of the Christian Wushu Fellowship.

Sifu Chuck was first introduced to the martial arts at the tender age of 8, when his father took him to a Judo Dojo run by Sensei Charlie Formosa in Oshawa, Ontario. From there his love of martial arts began.

During his teenage years, he spent 3 years in Tae Kwon Do (Jong Park Tae Kwan Do) (a knee injury prevented him from pursuing the art further).

During his college years, he met an amateur boxer, and was taught elements of Western boxing. After graduating from college with a degree in Mechanical Engineering Technology, Sifu Chuck later pursued training in Kosho Ryu Kenpo for 3 years under Hanshi Rick Buchan.

After becoming a Christian in 1997, he continued training in martial arts, but started praying that he could find a system of martial arts that was based on scientific principles and taught by a Christian instructor. He later moved to Kitchener, Ontario in 1998 and stopped training in martial arts because of the heavy influences of eastern mystism.

He was later introduced to Wing Chun by a friend, and his love for Wing Chun gung fu began. Sifu Chuck began searching for books, videos, and the internet for any information he could find on Ving Tsun. While looking for a Mook Yan Jong (Wooden dummy) to help in his pursuit of Wing Chun gung fu, he met Grandmaster Nelson Chan a Christian Wing Chun Sifu from the Yip Man - Moy Yat line in late 1999.

From their first meeting, Chuck knew he found his answer to prayer, and his sifu. Sifu Chuck would drive from Kitchener to the Christian Wushu Fellowship in Toronto, Ontario for 3 1/2 years to train under Grandmaster Chan's watchful eye. He would return home and train every evening all that he learned from each meeting with Grandmaster Chan. He later moved back to Toronto for 2 1/2 years to be closer to his Sifu, while still working in the KW area. It was during these years at Christian Wushu Fellowship, that Grandmaster Chan encouraged Chuck to explore teaching Ving Tsun. Chuck found that he had a heart for teaching, and found enjoyment in seeing others grow. Sifu Chuck moved back to the Kitchener-Waterloo area in 2006, and with Grandmaster Chan's encouragement has started teaching Wing Chun in Kitchener at Heritage Martial arts.

Sifu Chan Cheuk Yiu continues to have a close relationship with Grandmaster Chan. And continues to train and teach at Christian Wushu Fellowship, refining his Ving Tsun under Grandmaster Chan's guidance.

In 2006, Chuck was introduced to John Koeshall (CEI-PFS Full Instructor) and began training in PFS - Jeet Kune Do Concepts. Under John's training Chuck received his 'Apprentice Instructor' certificate. Sifu Chuck later went on to train with PFS founder Paul Vunak, and currently holds 'Full Instructor' status under Paul Vunak. Sifu Chuck still trains with Paul 'Uncle Vu' Vunak in PFS - Jeet Kune Do Concepts.

Sifu Chuck has also provided Executive Protection to UFC Fighters, Heath Herring & Chuck Liddell at events.

Sifu Chan Cheuk Yiu is also learning Yang style Tai Chi Chuan from Master Hung Ting Seng at the Christian Wushu Fellowship. And has had the pleasure of training at the Inosanto Academy, and privately with is Wing Chun SiBok (Uncle) Gary Lam in California.

Sifu Chuck also holds the following certifications/titles:
